This book discusses the supporting elements of the tooth detailing its four components: cementum, alveolus, periodontal ligament, and the gingiva. Prior to detailing the components of the periodontium, the three tissue types that compose the periodontium, namely epithelium, connective tissue, and bone, are reviewed. Those aspects of epithelium and connective tissue that pertain to the periodontium are emphasized, whereas those aspects that have merely a cursory relevance to the periodontium, as for example adipose tissue, are mentioned only briefly.
