National Geographic makes such great maps, they would outdo most any other map IF they included miles on their trails! I'm relegated to using Google Maps to try to guess (using their ruler tool) how long a trail is. I would give this 3.5 starts (1.5 off) just because of that. We'll cut 'em some slack and give it 4/5.I've copied and pasted this same review for all National Geographic topo maps. Great maps, don't tear, solidly made, seems like the details are accurate. PLEASE ADD MILEAGE!
Of course, THIS particular Nat Geographic map included the best off road motorcycle area in the USA! Put this together with the book "4WD Trails of SW Colorado" and you are ready to go. (The Benchmark Road and Recreation Atlas for Colorado is good too.)
My map box (converted ammo box) has always had all of the National Forest maps for my home state of Colorado, plus some of Wyoming and New Mexico. Now it's really filling up with these AWESOME water-resistant, tear-resistant, very detailed maps. I'm over 60 and frequently hike alone into fairly remote places, but not without one of THESE MAPS & a compass, GPS & batteries, UDAP bear spray, and an ACR Personal Locator Beacon. The maps are what I really use, both to find may way in and out, and to ensure that I'm fishing on public -- not private -- property. Can't live without 'em.
This map shows everything: main roads, hiking/biking trails, dirt roads, topography, everything. Unless you are just going to sit in town, you absolutely need this map or the one like it from Latitude 40 maps (ISBN 1-879866-16-1). I bought both of them and we spent a week based in Telluride hiking and driving both paved and unpaved roads, with no missteps.
I recently purchased this map so that I could hike the Highland Mary Lakes Trail with some pack llamas. I also carried a Latitude 40 map (http://www..com/Telluride-Silverton-Colorado-Trails-Recreation/dp/B003ZD5F9U/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1344270179&sr=8-2&keywords=latitude+40+maps) of the area. I quickly learned that the Latitude 40 map contained significantly more trails than the Nat Geo maps. The Nat Geo maps didn't even indicate major trails in the area. Simply put, I was not impressed and will likely seek other map options in the future.
Fast delivery. Map was as advertized. Shows most of the 4x4 trails around Silerton, Lake City, Ouray and Teluride. Well worth the money.
Your going to need a map... This series is tough and shows the big picture. if you're going off trail, or if you need details, you'll want to go to USGS series. But if you are looking for big picture, these are good. Definitely an important part of your tool kit for this area, IMHO.
I HATE this one.!! OK, I do like the series, I have a number of these maps for our travels great!!! But this particular one ""Telluride/Silverton/Ouray/--Lake city"" The architect for this map needs to be horse whipped!! The main reason I need this map is for the 3 primary Telluride/Silverton/Ouray.. They are place on the map on the far edge of the map.. meaning, Telluride is on one side of the map,Ouray /Silverton areas are on BOTH sides of the map... Depending on the part you want to look at, you have to Keep flipping it back over to see.. Even the main ONLY hwy that goes up from Durango all the way to Ouray keeps going in and out of the map on one side and goes on the map on the other side!!! THIS map will be my paper to start my camp fire, will have to look for another map on this one!!
