If the product description had mentioned that this is a two-sided map that measures 45" x 36", I would have bought another map. Our car isn't especially small, but this map is much too large for the passenger to use while navigating unfamiliar roads. To make matters worse, our itinarary happens to take us from one side of the map to the other.I was going to simply discard it, and then I discovered the map's only saving grace--the scale is the same on both sides, and the area I need is printed on different parts of this huge sheet of paper. So I cut out the two sections, trimmed the edges, and taped them together. Now I have a map that I can use, although it's surprisingly lacking in detail for one with a scale of 1 inch to 8.5 miles. Still, it will do, at least until I get to New York, where I can pick up a more useful local map of the area I'm visiting.
It's easy to read in the same way that a coated pill is easy to swallow. Everything is bigger than on a normal map. Not for the hard of sight, but not magnifying glass worthy. It's a fairly large map, but not a wall map. I'd say it's good if you're lost without GPS or cellular data. Spread it across your hood, have someone hold the other side, and get there safely.
I should have listened to reviews. A badly designed map, too large for convenient use, but for those like me, it's useless if you live in New York City and want a map to cover nearby counties. Note: You need to turn map over to find New York City and environs. For me, the cut off couldn't have been in the worst geographical spot. The map is terrible for Hudson River communities south of Albany to Manhattan, which must be the largest population group. But for anyone way upstate it's probably fine. If I were in charge of the map's design I would have put the entire state on one side, and all other birds eye views and information on the other. Why not view the whole state at a glance?
I like paper maps - I'm one of those people who goes off on random trips, but well researched. My preferred method of traveling an area is to read a book on it, mark up a map with a highlighter, and set off, sort sticking to the highlighted route, but not necessarily. This is a great map for that, although the split in the front and back sides of the map went right through a part of the state I would have preferred to have on the same side. Ah well, I suppose no one consulted me on the shape of the state, and they had to split the map somewhere.
It showed us everything that we needed to know about western New York. The streets were accurate and there is just something about being able to see more of your planned route than can be shown on a 5" screen that is helpful when traveling in an unknown area.
We have moved to Somers, Westchester county, and I felt I need a new road map. It happened to be useless, so poorly detailed it is. There is no road 100, many roads are without names, so it cannot be used as a road map. A waste of money.
The map was clear and I was able to chart my trip but the paper used started to rip at the creases on the first opening. It would seem with the price I paid that Rand McNally would use some decent paper.
Super state map with larger print. It was very detailed with all of the information I needed for rest stops, large cities, milage data, etc. The only negative is it's size. It is larger than most maps and has to be turned over to continue to the other half of the state. However, I still prefer, the larger print. Would highly recommend this map.
