Since the 1960's I've been following the Stanley Brothers. Because there were no liner notes on singles or LP's I always wondered who was playing in the band at the time of these recordings. Later on in years I was able to get some information, but not as in depth as this. This book is a must for any Stanley Brother fan. Great job Gary. You've cast light into what was a dark place of much needed information. Thanks for your research. Long live the Stanley Brothers!!!

Absolutely an outstanding chronology of the recordings of this amazing duo. The commentary and explanations for many things that were done on the recordings along with information regarding the sidemen and others involved in these recordings is wonderful. So much of this information can easily be lost if not recorded as Gary Reid so masterfully did in this book. It has a lot of value and meaning to those of us that understand how unique and special the music that these two brothers created in the short span of 20 years. Thank you for this magnificent work.

I like knowing about the music I listen to. The composer(s), the musicians, where was it recorded, and I always enjoy knowing the dates the tracks were laid down. THE MUSIC OF THE STANLEY BROTHERS is one of those books that not only gives you all that information, but also shows how their music was sharpened during their career together.Gary Reid has proven time and time again how he seeks out the who, what, where, when and how of bluegrass music and it's wonderful history. Here is no exception, as we find out all the facts about their music and the recordings they made. Excerpts from interviews from the past have added to the enjoyment of reading this work.If you are a bluegrass fan, and a Stanley Brothers fan more so, then you would be pleased to read this informative work.

I can't say anything that hasn't already been said about the Stanley Brothers. They are the original lonesome duo of bluegrass music. I always think of dark hollows and whipoorwills when I hear them sing those old ballads. Doesn't get any better in my opinion.
