In a sea of books about postmodernism, some are so thickly theoretical reading them feels like wading through mud. Others are amazingly boring. Hutcheon manages to have a sense of humor about postmodern strategies that often use humor, and she's quite readable. I read the synopses and reviews of a lot of books, and I've read a number of books about pomo, but this is the one that covers what I really want to see.
This is an excellent study. Read it with Fredric Jameson's Postmodernism, or, The Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism (cultural analysis of pomo), Brian McHale's Postmodernist Fiction (formalist analysis of pomo), and Amy Elias's Sublime Desire: History and Post-1960s Fiction (literary historical treatment of historical pomo) and you've got a great library about postmodernist literature.
