I am a Czech speaker so I figured I'd chime in, as the other reviews don't really portray this book correctly.A number of these expressions will make you sound like a sleezy, vulgar teenager ("Hey dogg, look at those tits?" Seriously?) or a Czech Valley Girl/ similar airhead. You do not want to talk to acquaintances like this, much less people you don't know (even in a party setting). You will get funny stares if you say this loud enough for respectable people to hear. As for the other half of the book, there are some useful greetings or slang phrases that you can use with your buddies. In this respect, it may be worth it to you. However, I would wager it's just another cheesy phrase book that won't be of much use. I'd recommend browsing this book before buying (click "look inside" on the title page.)
Love this book! It has a lot of cultural references and things I didn't know. Seems like a good "real world" travel guide. I was expecting a list of obscenities and insults, and this doesn't disappoint in that regard, but it also offers some handy facts and cultural context. For example - it explains the different kinds of bars, different kinds of beer, sexual norms, etc. I wasn't expecting that and was pleasantly surprised to find it. One caveat however - it does NOT provide any type of pronunciation guide, so you will need to know the Czech language to use it as much of Czech doesn't sound like you would think if you read it phonetically....
My grandma absolutely LOVES this book and is swearing all the time now. It's hysterical to watch her... and if my Grandma can pick up a language from a book, then you know it's easily explained and well done.
I grew up speaking both Czech and English, and let me tell you, this book is actually pretty awful.Like one reviewer said, you're just going to sound like vulgar middle school boy who figured out what the word "tits" means.Just talk to a person who speaks Czech. Or even Google it. Google is right often!
As another reviewer pointed out, better to enter into meaningful conversation than to try and shock others. This book is more a product of the patho-adolescent society that tends to predominate in the West. Check out engoi.com for a free and useful site.
As the man on the cover says, "Co je? (What's up? to those not in the know). I haven't yet gotten to read every page but what I have read so far gives me a belly laugh! Where else can you learn such phrases in Czechoslovakian and use them on tourists and others in Las Vegas? My son's name is Jay. I rattle his cage when I greet him on the phone with "Co je?" I had to stop using it because I was afraid he'd respond with, "Jaete do prdele!" That would be rude.
if your chat runs toward "street" language, this book can help you find almost any expression you might need... it offers a lot of guidance for those still engaged in an active sex life and it doesn't assume that all your interests will be slanted toward either opposite or same sex... just casual sex of virtually any particular bent... at the same time, it recognizes that all of your interests as a tourist will not be limited to viewing ceilings but geared toward the usual touristy needs; getting around on public transportation; eating in a fast or fine food restaurant; visiting memorable, notable sites; and so forth.... chapter headings include Howdy, Friendly, Party, Body, Horny, Angry, Poppy, Sporty, and Hungry... the author seems to reflect a genuine sense of humor and a high tolerance for accepting that people will be people no matter where you find them... not everyone's cup of tea but if you're not easily offended and recognize that a certain amount of wildness exists universally, you'll find this guide helpful... or at least that's what I believe... I'm in frequent communication with my would-be hosts in Prague (whose English language skills are better than my Czech skills) but via this book we've been able to understand each other sufficiently to have substantive conversations about our joint expectations of a proposed lengthy visit (I am an EU passport holder)... not lascivious but definitely not for nuns, the shy, or prudes... got it?
If you're planning a trip to Prague or Cesky Krumlov or any of the beautiful places in the Czech Republic, find room in your backpack for a copy of Martin Blaha's "Dirty Czech". Packed with insider tips about the language and culture, this book is a Rosetta Stone for the pub-crawler. I am visiting the Czech Republic in October, and I'm so glad I've had the opportunity to read and study "Dirty Czech".If you've done any amount of traveling around the world, you know that any attempt to speak the language of the country you're visiting is greatly appreciated by the locals. Saying please, thank you, you're welcome, and excuse me in the native tongue will always be helpful. But if you really want to connect with the locals, really enhance your trip and get a true taste of the country you need to learn the slang and the way the residents truly talk. "Dirty Czech" is the book that will help you with that. While you might not have the occasion in Prague to say "Splachni to! Nechi vedet tvy hovno!" (Flush it! I don't wanna see your s--t!), it's hilarious to know that you could utter those words at any moment. But if you're single and looking to meet a girl or guy, going up to somebody in a bar and saying "Co si das? Je to na me" (What are you having? It's on me) could be the perfect conversation starter. And if after a few drinks that beautiful stranger whispers to you "Totalne me rajcujes" you'll know that you're not going back to your hostel alone because they just said, "I'm totally hot for you." However, if he or she mutters "Nodlim se k smrti" (I'm bored out of my skull), probably best to talk to somebody else.I really enjoyed reading "Dirty Czech", and I'm going to continue to practice with it right up until I leave for Prague. It will certainly make the trip with me, and will be in my pocket as I walk the streets, tour the sites, hit the bars, and talk to the locals.
