If yer looking fer a dog to kick cuz your friend got his neck streched by some pepper gut sheep dippers this book is fer you. If not then you probably don't have enough guts to make a string of ghost cord and you better look over your shoulder or someone will make wolves meat of you.
Western history books, novels, and movies (see TNT's "Purgatory") are becoming more "accurate" with the language that was used during the great cowboy era of the US. This book will help you with that terminology. Ramon F. Adams was one of the great historians of this period. His "Burs Under the Saddle" and "More Burs Under the Saddle" should be mandatory reading for those studying this period in our history.
If you are an author writing Westerns you need this book. It will save you in many ways. It answers all your questions on what words to use.Masterfully done. I could not live with out this book.
I bought this book as a way of making my own story more authentic and believable. There is nothing I hate worse then to be reading a historical novel and suddenly have one of the characters say something that would not have been said during that time period. That really pulls me at least out of the story, not what I want as a writer to do in my own story.
If you are looking for the explanation of what a certain word means or meant and it's origin then this is the book you want to have. I bought it because I am doing research on the old West and this seem to be as good a place to start.
I'm doing American west research and have found "Western Words" has become one of my go to books while trying to establish a connection to the dialog of that period of American history.For all period history buffs I would suggest you add this book to your library.
As an author, this book has been a great source of information as I try to make a strong connection with my readers in building the characters in my novels. Trying to capture the language of the time when writing a story is vital to capturing the readers imagination. This book has helped me in many ways as I research the times and the lives that I create.
