Abnormal Psychology (7th Edition) by T.F. Oltmanns and R.E. Emery is an excellent textbook that I used for a psychopathology course at the University of Michigan my sophomore year. The writing style is simple to understand, an added bonus because I was new to the material. I am a psychology major and textbooks are essential to learning in the classroom. I’ve read other texts for various classes including Social Psychology by T. Gilovich and Cognitive Psychology by R.J. Sternberg, but this one is the most memorable and engaging. Not only was this book simple to understand, but it was entertaining (at least, as entertaining as textbooks can be) and provided real world situations to illustrate the material. Included in the book are case studies which provide examples to complement the text. For instance, in a section about bipolar disorder, there would be a case example of a person who displays symptoms related to it, what could’ve been potential causal factors and how they may function in everyday life. The book also includes personal interviews of individuals with a specific disorder, but I did not use that resource for class and am unable to attest to whether it was a useful tool. In this way, the book is interactive with the reader and assists in making the material easier to retain.Though I read this book at the college level, it is applicable to anyone who is interested in learning more about mental disorders. I would recommend this for anyone at the high school level and older. It is expensive, but if you’re passionate on this topic, this is a book you can reference for the rest of your life. It’s also a bit hefty to carry, but a sacrifice worth making for the benefit of expanding your knowledge on the subject.
