I have always enjoyed volumes like this. Simply, they are fun to peruse. I often just pick pages at random, to see what treat might be there. Just so, this time around.The book is divided by sport--from baseball and pro football to tennis and golf and soccer to horse racing, track and field and the full gamut of sports. For each events of the year are described. Also appearing in many instances are all-time records (such as World Series records--with the teams of Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, et al. dominating many of the hitting records).Some of my random "hits." World Series career batting records (minimum of 40 at bats): Games--Yogu Berra (75); Batting average--David Ortiz (.455); Home runs--Mickey Mantle (18); RBIs--Mickey Mantle (40); Stolen bases--Lou Brock (14) and so on.AFC (football) team statistics for 2013. Among the statistics--individual scoring leaders per team, passing statistics for QBs, rushing statistics, and on. One can compare teams within the AFC to see how your favorite players stack up against players from other teams.On pages 219 and 220--all time leaders in the top division of NCAA football. Rushing--most yards gained in a career is Ron Dayne (over 6,000 yards); Passing--Most yards gained-Case Keenum (over 19,000 yards); Most yards rushing in a season--Barry Sanders (over 2600 yards).National Hockey League records are displayed. Amazing to see how Wayne Gretzky so dominates scoring records (with Mario Lemieux impressing as well).Overall, a lot of fun to look at this on a day off from work.
It is not as good as the Information Please / ESPN Sports Almanacs that were published until 2009, but it is the only general U.S. sports almanac still available, so I am glad that this is still being published.
I am sure this is a wonderful book for someone that enjoys football facts. I had bought this as a gift for a 12 year old boy and felt it was too wordyand not enough pictures for this particular child. It is my fault it does say almanac!!
This book has lots of good sports info, such as stats and scores from all pro and college championship events. But being a San Antonio SPURS, I'm disappointed that there is no SPURS player on the front or the back cover. After all, they did win the 2014 NBA championship, so you would think that one of them would be on the front or back cover. GO SPURS!
Very good read. I love the statistics side of sports. There are however two small negatives on this almanac: The statistics for some of the 'minor' sports are not always available each year. One year a given table of data may be there and the next year it is not. For example, my particular sport is swimming. Sometimes the data for world championship swimming are there and sometimes not. So be aware.Secondly, the binding on the book is not very good. If you have a particular section of the book that you use more frequently than others, the pages will separate or detach very soon at that point.
Buy this every year since espn stopped publishing a yearly almanac. About what you would expect from a sports almanac. Very disappointed that each section used to contain about a 2 to 3 page introduction which functioned as a year in review for every sport in the almanac and these summaries were deleted from this year's book.
I purchased this book to learn about 2015. As a child (and adult) of the 80s, I thought it might be a fruitful souvenir during my time here in the future. Unfortunately, the book was stolen from my... uh. car, which forced me down a separate skewed timeline, causing much tribulations and trials. Luckily, my girlfriend Jennifer didn't have to deal with too much of the trauma, as she's prone to fainting.Thank goodness, I was able to visit an alternative version of my future, return to the past, and re-aquire the book from the antagonistic older version of my father's downtrodden tormentor. In the end I chose to burn the book before it fell into the wrong hands again. Would have given 5 stars, but the book was altogether too easy to steal in the first place. As this is 2015, I would have preferred the inclusion of a holographic warning system, or self-returning feature.
I bought it for ONE damn reason: Summer Olympic history. Not one damn event or even a Summer Olympics category!!!! It's a piece of crap. HOW, HOW, HOW can you publish a Sports Almanac and leave out the Summer Olympics????" DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK !!!!
