Don’t cross your eyes or they’ll stay like that! Feed a cold, starve a fever! Don’t touch your Halloween candy until we get it checked out! Never run with scissors Don’t look in the microwave while it’s running! This will go down on your permanent record Is any of it true? If so, how true? Ken Jennings wants to find out if mother and father always know best. Yes, all those years you were told not to sit too close to the television (you’ll hurt your eyes!) or swallow your gum (it stays in your stomach for seven years!) or crack your knuckles (arthritis!) are called into question by our country’s leading trivia guru. Jennings separates myth from fact to debunk a wide variety of parental edicts: no swimming after meals, sit up straight, don’t talk to strangers, and so on. Armed with medical case histories, scientific findings, and even the occasional experiment on himself (or his kids), Jennings exposes countless examples of parental wisdom run amok. Whether you’re a parent who wants to know what you can stop worrying about or a kid (of any age) looking to say, “I told you so,” this is the anti–helicopter parenting book you’ve been waiting for.

We all grew up with a plethora of "wive's tales" that just seem to get passed on from generation to generation. You know the adages like: "Don't run with a sucker in your mouth", "Check your Halloween candy for needles & poison", "Feed a cold, starve a fever". How many of these sayings are based on truth and how many of them are totally (or partially) fiction? Ken Jennings takes a number of these well known sayings and picks them apart - examining each one for every grain of truth AND just plain old baloney. At the end of each segment you know just where the saying came from and what parts are true or not true based on science, observation, experiments, etc. and all the while you'll be highly entertained by Ken's lighthearted and humorous style of writing. The book is separated into several sections as you can see from the book preview. It covers a great deal of territory: everything from health related adages to sayings that have to do with the seasons, eating, school related things, grooming, warnings...if you've heard it, it's probably in this book. ;-)I swear I heard almost every single saying growing up and have said more than a few to my own kids, LOL. There were some definite "aha!" moments as I realized that some of the things I thought I knew, I didn't really and vise versa. My teen son also read this book and LOVED it. He kept coming over to share new things he learned. One word of warning to parents though, there are a few concepts you might not want your younger children reading about like the section entitled, "If you keep touching it, you'll get hairy palms and go blind!" Nothing like having your teen strike up a conversation about THAT.
