If you are just doing your CP rotations for pathology, or are interested in going into Transfusion Medicine, this is a great book. It is a 'fundamentals' book that gives you the basics, but in a very comprehensive way. It's not dense at all, you can read it on the go and in little chunks. I also used it as a reference book for blood bank call. You are, of course, going to need another reference book, but it's a good ice-breaker to BB for pathology residents (or anyone else for that matter). I highly recommend this book.

I read this book in it's entirety during my first blood bank rotation--it was an easy read. It is perfect for pathology residents. It is well written, consistently understandable, accurate, and reads very quickly. The first half of the book is much more high yield for residents. It covers blood groups (antigens/antibodies), transfusion principles, products, storage, reactions, etc. The second half gets rather tedious as it covers factor replacements, synthetic products/blood substitutes, as well as administrative concerns for blood banking. These are sometimes tested on standardized exams (certainly for fellows more than residents) so it is good to read the whole book. But I recommend making a closer study of the first half than the second if you really want a solid foundation for understanding transfusion medicine.Every pathology resident and transfusion medicine fellow should read this book. Surgery and Medicine residents would benefit greatly also.Really, if you own Petrides, the Standards book, the Tech Manual, and the Antigen/Antibodies book, you would never need to search farther than your own bookshelf for an answer to any clinically relevant transfusion medicine question. But that is probably more than any resident needs--perfect for a fellow though.

If your having trouble understanding blood banking and a need a good intro book to the basic principles of transfusion medicine and blood banking this book is it. Not only is it easy to understand, it is pleasurable and an easy book to read. As a pathology fellow, I urge any resident who is involved in clinical pathology and blood banking to grab a copy. It will make your life a lot easier.
