I have heard a myriad of great things about The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah from my family and friends. Naturally, I decided I needed to read this book that is spoken so highly of. I stumbled upon this summary & analysis for only a dollar while I was searching for the book, so I thought I'd give this a skim before I dove into The Nightingale. I wanted to get a better idea of the story, plot, characters and themes since I'm not a big fan of novels about war. I have to say though, this one is different. It gives you a new perspective into the women who are also suffering the terrible infractions of war. Instead of just being in the background and worrying about their husbands and sons, the book dives into the lives of Vianne and Isabelle, two sisters fighting for their lives, their families and who they are. It's definitely a new and refreshing perspective to read about what women did or had to do during the war to survive and save the ones they loved. These women endured inconceivable horrors and sadness; they had to face dangerous situations, people and had to make difficult decisions. They are strong, brave, reckless, lion-hearted women who despite all the hardships keep looking forward and doing what needs to be done in order to get there.I particularly liked how the Summary & Analysis of The Nightingale had extensive character analysis of the main and secondary characters. I always love reading those before I start a book, that way I feel like I know everyone when I begin to read and I don't get confused early in the book when characters are being introduced. I tend to forget who did what or who is who when there is too much going on in the beginning so this was helpful. I definitely recommend reading this either before or after you read the actual book, it's worth it to get a clearer understanding of the book. I personally like to read it before so I don't miss anything while I'm reading but you do get some spoilers so it's up to you fellow readers!
“The Nightingale” by Kristin Hannah is a compelling story set in 1939 France. As Paris is taking a beating from Nazi occupation, the idyllic village Carriveau is getting ready to change forever. Warplanes, tanks, bombs, and Nazi soldiers have become commonplace. Young wife Vianne Mauiac is married to a newly drafted soldier; but in the meantime, she is obligated to host a Nazi in her home. At the same time, her reckless sister Isabelle has joined the French Resistance, risking everything. This is another terrific companion summary and analysis from Book*Sense that tackles all the deep details of the original novel and provides a deeper understanding of the book. As with all the companions I’ve read from Book*Sense, this one is well-written and includes a detailed book review, story setting analysis, story element that might have been missed during your reading, characters, chapter-by-chapter summary, a look at themes and symbols, and more.Personally, I appreciated the character analysis and list of secondary characters, and the examination of the major symbols—something I seem to overlook in most initial readings. For example, in “The Nightingale,” changing seasons are a symbol for life continuing as normal, no matter what. This was extremely helpful and truly added to the overall enjoyment of the novel.
The Nightingale was a spectacular read. It is a big historical novel and follows two sisters as their lives take different turns in war-torn World War II France. It opens up at a tumultuous time in world history and gives it a very personal look and viewpoint that is refreshing and strong. There is so much that the two sisters go through. Vianne is pushed to the breaking point in a battle to stay alive and keep her family safe. Then there is Isabelle and all the fiery passion of young love and joining the Resistance. With such grand ideas, jumps in time and several characters taking the reins as the story unfolds, it really helped me to read Summary & Analysis. I seemed to have a lot of trouble with all the players and names so the great character list with a clear glimpse of who’s who helped a great deal. The author also delivers a clear chapter by chapter overview that clears up many of the history questions and the book's direction, that I had.
I find books like The Nightingale very difficult to read. There are so many names and plot points to remember, and then you have the characters jumping back and forth in time. I enjoy this kind of plot, but it can be tricky to follow. That is why I love these analysis books by Book*Sense. They give you a summary of the overall book, a summary of each chapter, and also help you keep important characters straight. My favorite part are the questions at the end of the synopsis and analysis. They really help me consider all that I’ve read, put it in perspective, and take my understanding of the work to a whole new level. Not only do they ask you to consider the book itself, but also the author, Kristin Hannah.I recommend these while you are reading the book to help deepen your understanding, as well as to review after you’ve already read the book. Especially if you’re one of those readers who really enjoys taking a critical look at the books you read to help you retain what you’ve read and completely understand it.
