Landmarks in Humanities is a single-volume survey of global culture designed for students of humanities, cultural history, and history of the arts. In chronological sequence, Landmarks highlights the most notable monuments of the human imagination--those works of art and architecture, literature, philosophy, and music that have been foremost in shaping the world's cultures. The text reflects the author's extensive background in the study of Humanities which has enabled her to craft a narrative that is at once brief and comprehensive, giving students a thorough understanding of the humanities without overwhelming them with detail. Each of the text's fifteen chapters is centered on a key idea related to the period being discussed and contains a series of valuable pedagogical features including chapter ending timelines, high-quality maps, and boxed material examining primary sources and cross-cultural comparisons. In addition, an outstanding supplements package accompanies the text, featuring a wealth of resources for both students and instructors.

I can honestly say this book kept me interested. I was not looking forward to the course. I started reading this book and my outlook changed.

My daughter, a Biology major, was assigned this text for a required introductory Humanities course. She was dreading taking the course which she was taking on line. Happily she found this text to be clearly written and lively enough to hold her interest. After completing the first few assignments she related to me, a BA in European History, what she had been reading. I began reading this book and was quite impressed with both the depth of the material and the clarity with which it was being presented. There is a huge time period being covered here (prehistory to the modern day) and, instead of focusing solely on the European experience, also includes, (although not in any great depth) African, Asian and Native American experiences as well. In addition to the well written text there are also numerous illustrations including the expected reproductions of art works but also maps, blueprints and photographs that further enhance the text.I also felt that the format was well thought out particularly for a student working independently, as in the case of a on line course. At the end of each chapter there is a Timeline that lays out the various high points of the period in question graphically illustrating how these events related to one another. The beginning of each chapter has a listing of the key topics that will be covered. These features, couple with an extensive glossary and index greatly aided in preparing for and taking on line exams.Overall I felt that this was an excellent text. My daughter, who was initially resistant to the material, found topics that interested her and helped her to 'expand her horizons'. I have been interested in and have studied many of the topics covered over a number of years but also learned much from this text.

This is a text book that would be interesting to read even if not taking the course. The book arrived on time and I saved a buck from my University book store price.

I compared this to the table of contents to the 3rd edition .....it's practically the same.I found a good deal on this so I'm "pre-reading " it for an upcoming class while I have the time,. I may end up renting a 3rd edition if it becomes critical to the class @ Polk State. My wellness class prof said it didn't matter if we used the latest edition.....after I found a book @ a thrift store and already spent $80 renting a book... :(

This is as good as an undergraduate text book on the subject could be. It tries to introduce some aspects of foreign cultures to the readers too. But if the book, in its future editions, extends on that aspect it will make it even a better work. American students need to learn more about other cultures, civilizations and all the human sentiments, motivations and values that are common to us all and are necessary for the preservation and endurance of human race.

Came in promptly and excited to read it. Looks beautiful too. There's a wide range of cultures that are spoken about and nice to read. (although it was for class)

This is a textbook for a Humanities class. The text is not well written or well organized. I would have gotten nothing from this course without attending class and having the professor tell the stories of the people we are studying. The DVD-ROM is useless. It has no music, very little literature or artwork. If you click on a music icon, it redirects you to a web link to find the music. Some of the links do not work. If you have the chance to buy a book without the DVD and save money, do it. If you are in a position to choose which books to use for a course you teach, choose something else.

This is not the book for class, but no fault to the seller. I needed to go with the price and close to the text I could get. I thank my heavenly father you gave me a chance to make it work. Thank you so much.
