Love this book- I consider this the best spine injection book currently on the market. I have the Kindle edition, which I use of my IPadStrengths:- lots of illustrations- unique amongst books on the market are pictures of sub-optimal images, so that you know what NOT to do, in addition to what to do- written from the perspective of "what would the injectionist want to know"- too many books are written from perspective of a collection of random thoughts, and not focused enough- even though there are different authors for chapters, the book reads like it has a consistent voice- lots of clinical pearls to help learn nuances for each procedure
This book is a much needed atlas for both beginner and experienced interventionists. It places emphasis on set up and technique. It correlates anatomy with fluoroscopic imaging and provides countless pearls. With each procedure it tells a visual story without too much description that is often difficult to follow. It is bold in its ability to demonstrates "suboptimal" imaging which allows the interventionist an opportunity to see needle placement and flow patterns that are often very difficult to find. Emphasis on safety views are key to potential complications. Furman and colleagues have truly created a book that teaches based on experience. An invaluable resource and highly recommended.
Dr. Furman is to be commended on this new textbook. It is innovative and clearly distinguishes itself from the other textbooks on the market.PROS:1. Consistent use of fluoroscopic terminology such as trajectory view, multiplanar and safety views not only provide a consistent thread throughout the book(in spite of various authors) but also help reinforce the fundamental utility of each view. The author provides the reader with this framework for lumbar, thoracic, and cervical interventional techniques.2. Demonstration of suboptimal views. Demonstrating picture perfect technique is important, but interventionalists also need to recognize what suboptimal looks like. Providing examples enables the reader to better recognize this in their own practice.3. The author demonstrates the critical non-visible structures(nerves, vessels and viscera one wishes to avoid) in relation to bony anatomy in schematic diagrams, then has a fluoroscopic image adjacent to the diagram to help the reader mentally visualize these non-visible structures in the fluoroscopic image. Having a 3 dimensional concept is paramount for safe and efficient technique.4. The author quotes ISIS Guidelines and where appropriate, comments on controversies or rationale for departing from the Guidelines.5. The author covers techniques that may not be covered in the average interventional textbook such as fluoroscopic technique(optimal views, radiation safety and pearls) ganglion impar block, atlanto-axial joint injection, radiofrequency denervation, and spinal cord stimulation.CONS:Dr. Furman makes it clear that the goal of this textbook is to demonstrate optimal use of image guidance for a given technique. He intentionally defers to other textbooks to cover the other aspects of a procedure, such as indications, contraindications and other non-image related features. This book gets my top recommendation.
This atlas has been the only useful guide available to lead me in my quest to perform intraspinal injections in a safer and more effective manner. It clearly and concisely describes the use of the contralateral oblique view in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine for a variety of injections. As a result of this atlas I have changed the way that I perform at least a half dozen procedures that I have been performing for 20 years. In fact, I find this atlas so useful that that have the kindle version that I can access via the Kindle cloud from my office, surgery center and smartphone. Since I started in this field twenty years ago I have been a collector of sorts of textbooks and atlases. I have accumulated at least twenty atlases and I find this one to contain the most reliable, useful information. I congratulate Dr. Furman in what he has accomplished. I only wish that it had been available as a teaching tool back in the 1990's when I founded and directed a fellowship program at a majority university medical center.
This is a really wonderful book. I had been performing image guided spinal injections for almost two decades and I thought my technique was very good. I got this book because I am of the opinion that I can always be better whether it's in reading MRIs, doing ultrasound guided injections or spine procedures. I learned so much from this book. The pictures, diagrams and text are easy to follow. I had been doing things the same way for so long that I never thought about doing it a little bit different. Because of this book my skills and precise-ness of my needle placement have improved.Jerry Sobel MDPhoenix, AZ
(review is actually by her husband, a physiatrist)Dr Furman and his colleagues have published an atlas that translates well for both clinicians and their patients. Being able to show patients the specifics of the procedures that are recommended, in easy-to-explain diagrams, is a godsend for breeding patient confidence in said recommendations. Well done.
