This book is really different from all other parenting books I’ve come across. Whereas other books provide guidance on one style of parenting or another to be adopted by one or both parents, “Kids Don’t Come with a Manual” provides multiple perspectives and options, and in essence is just as much an exploration of our own styles and what drives them, allowing us to refine our approach as a parenting team and adopt it to particular situations. In addition it not only covers dealing with situations on a child-by-child basis, but also focuses just as much on dealing with situations that arise in families with multiple children.
This parenting guide made so much sense for me and my husband. It was insightful, practical and full of amazing advice. I also really appreciated the fact that the book helps parents think a lot more along the same lines when faced with the daily challenges of child rearing. A must-read!
This is a wonderfully insightful book.Definitely a must read for all parents or anyone who deals with children and it is in search of new tools and techniques to explore.I highly recommend their website as well. Full of practical and innovative advices on parenting.
Very easy to read and helpful book, full of practical examples and real life experience.Includes an extensive toolbox and covers all challenges of child rearing. Original in staging the voice of the "strict parent" and the voice of the "all-heart parent". Highly recommended.
Unlike other more "preachy" parenting books, "Kids Don't Come With a Manual" is pragmatic, easy to read and applicable to all gender and age situations. I think the fact that it is written by actual presently "parenting" parents makes the book and the advice held within very applicable to real life parenting situations. Originally I bought this book for my niece who is raising a 2 and a 4 year old. However, it contained wisdom and lessons applicable to some situation raising and parenting my 4 teenagers! Which says a great deal.I hope family therapists pay attention and give this "kid manual" its dues, as it has the makings of a classic parenting helpbook.
As a fellow Montessorian, I share the authors respect for the protection of the child's independence, which can be undermined if there are too many rules. Central to their well-being is discipline, but this will only be responded to when, and if, the child feels loved, unconditionally. This book is full of wisdom, from which we can all learn , however long our own associations with children have been. I recommend it wholeheartedly. Too often it is a lack of confidence in parenting skills, because, as the Saads remind us, there are no manuals. Here they have provided a very user friendly guide to parenting, this book would be of value to anyone with children in their care.
