I have posted similar reviews for other of this series,...The Explode the Code series is great. I have four children and they all seem to enjoy working through this series. I am seeing a benefit in their reading, spelling and writing skills. My kids regularly laugh and share with each other the funny little mistakes and stories from this series as they complete assignments.To be honest, any phonics program that my kids will do happily each day for YEARS without crying, complaining or whining is a major winner.I am finding that if I start the kids in book 1 in first grade, and take our time, that we come to this book near the beginning of third grade. These are a great independent learning tool.
I taught both of my sons (both 4 when we first started) how to read using Explode the Code. The books are well organized and use lots of repetition without boring the kids. Also the sentences used in the books are often humorous which keep my kids laughing. My only pet peeve about these books is that in a few cases, the drawings could have been better. However, overall, I highly recommend parents who would like to teach their children how to read to use Explode the Code.
I recommend this book to any homeschooling family. This book teaches vocabulary and spelling without the children even realizing it. My second grader truly loves it and rather do it first thing in the morning above all else. Buy it!
Explode the Code is a wonderful series of phonics books that supplement your child's reading. I have been homeschooling my kids with them for 3 years now. The lessons are simple and fun. The kids really get a kick out of the funny pictures and silly sentences. This is one curriculum your kids won't moan and groan over doing. And the price can't be beat!
By book five, admittedly the methods are a bit stale if you started with book one. But they still work and that's what counts. These books have been great not only at teaching my child how to read and spell, but building up her reading stamina as well. I just wished this book covered the -ar, -er, -or, -ir, -ur sounds. Instead it includes some blends like scr-, spr-, etc., which I don't feel are necessary to review. Your child will be able to to read those blends just fine after the previous lessons.
It assumes that your kids know the words without previous definition. Pick the best word to finish each sentence... but what if you don't know the meaning of the word? Also, why is the answer key not included with the books? It is sold separately! It would be faster to correct their work if I had a key. That said, my kids enjoy working in this book and they are learning. They prefer it to the program I was using before (Wordly Wise) which they felt was just busy work and was boring for them.
LOVE ETC the code books! They are so great for teaching phonics and they keep both of my kiddos engaged!
I started my 7 year old on the Explode the Code series in preschool. She went through books A, B, and C. And then we started into the numbered books. We are currently about to begin Book 5. They are a wonderful reinforcement to phonics. I'm now beginning the series with my 4 year old as well.
