The subtitle of the book which suggests it is an ESL Teacher's Guide is really MISleading ... it's one of the FINEST all-around books on English grammar EVER published, and is one where the reader must have a good degree of "prior knowledge" to appreciate the information contained in this book some of which I've never seen in any other English grammar book! There were a couple of areas that were condensed in this the 3rd edition that are expanded in the 2nd ed which is why I'm keeping my old edition; conversely, Professor Larsen expands on other areas in her 3rd ed which is a fair tradeoff. Also, the graphics and the layout using bold face type makes it an easier read this time around. Forget that it's geared for ESL students ... EVERY English teacher should at least be aware of this book if not have it as a permanent part of their classroom reference library. Additionally, I love the index / reference section at the end of the book where certain words can be looked at ["maybe vs perhaps" "some vs any," etc.] + the standard index of specific English topics, e.g., conditional sentences, prepositions, etc. Absolutely and positively LOVE this book! -- VictorGM@webtv.net
I am so excited to read this book. I have heard it is the book to have for ESL grammar teachers. This is the book that my professor recommended. I have yet to read it, but by skimming it, it looks thorough.
I personally think that this book should be treated as a bible for a language teacher since it has various approaches.
I have known Dr. Larsen-Freeman work since I studied my first MA in late 1980s. Now I'm working on my EdD, and bought the latest edition. This book is a must in every graduate student's library.
