Paul French has a cinematic talent for characters and settings, a broad deep knowledge of China in the early decades of the last century, and with the topic of China and the 1919 Paris Peace Conference he has an important and relatively unknown story. As French says in the book, the fallout from the conference (in particular, the decision to hand sovereignty of the former German enclave in Shandong to the Japanese rather than the Chinese) would help shape events in China over the next forty years. "Betrayal in Paris" is a fun, accessible and interesting read with just the right amount of detail.John Ross (Camphor Press)
When Germany lost World War I, it was required to surrender Shandong Province (home of Qingdao beer), which it had stolen from China. Strangely, Shandong was given not to China, but to Japan. This was a great injustice. Great Britain betrayed China, in order to strengthen its ties to Japan. The United States kowtowed to Japan to gain its support for the League of Nations. As is well known, Japan did not stop at Shandong.
