I used this book as a spelling curriculum when homeschooling my 12-14 year old sons. Rather than having children memorize lists of words, it actually focuses on the rules and skills needed to spell ANY word. The chapters were well-organized and the exercises were effective. Since completing the book, we have been using it as a reference.
I am half way through the book. It is helping tremendously. In the government-run education system, spelling is approached as a memorization task. Government's one-size-fits-all policies don't work in education (or any other social welfare service). The memorization approach is fine for those who learn in this fashion. For those of us who are analytical - usually good at math and physics - memorization does not work. This book gives rules that determine the spelling of a word. It teaches the analytically oriented how to spell.
I'm 58 years old and teaching myself the rules of spelling I should have learned in grade school but did not.
I had been looking for a great book of Spelling RULES and this is it! Although I've always loved spelling, I wanted to know WHY words were spelled a certain way. This book showed me that I was wrong about a couple things (YIKES!) and the reasons why. This is a great book and will appeal to many.
