I really love that this book is exactly the same as it was in 1824, but Applewood's copy quality stinks. The print is not sharp... a VERY low resolution copy. If the print was clear, this book would be perfect. But as it is, it is very hard for me to read/see, and I'm sure this difficulty would only be multiplied for any child trying to look at the pages.
Opening this tome is like peaking back in time at our lost historical glory. 98% literacy rate achieved by Noah Webster? Perhaps yes. Hard to read by todays standards but the cure to dyslexia is in these pages. Some important moral value is imparted as well.
My fifth graders get a kick out of looking at this. We do a Noah Webster research paper every year. Seeing this gives them an insight into his passion to record and share words. We also use a facsimile of his 1828 original dictionary in our classroom.
In this quaint little book of the original English language is contained the fundamentals of English speech and pronunciation. It is; however; just an explanation of common sense knowledge we already know like the pronunciation of basic English words with a few that you can add to your vocabulary. It also contains biblical lessons and fables of the time which are interesting when you think that this is how society back in the 1700s and 1800s were taught; especially when you compare it to today's teaching methods of the English language. Even if you know all there is to know about the English language, this little masterwork still serves as an impressive piece of nostalgia for your bookshelf. I often brandish it in front of my friends to show that I own a piece of history and everyone seems more than fascinated with it. It teaches not only the English language, but also adds in stories, lessons and moral virtues that you can apply to your own life. A definite must have!
Great little book. Since it's a reproduction, some of the letters are a bit difficult to read, but still worth it.
Own the text which taught America to read! A timeless classic offering incredible insight into the spiritual and educational history of our great nation.
This was bought as a gift for a librarian. I thought she would enjoy something like this.
