As a native English speaker and fluent French speaker Chinese was a great challenge. The Cheng-Tsui Integrated Chinese series is excellent. The books provide a clear, coherent and well-written guide to learning Chinese reading, writing, speaking and cultural education. There is a consistent set of characters you follow through subject-related lessons. Travel words, food, finding an apartment, seeing tourist sites, etc.The book has a set of great indices/vocabulary lists at the back of the book. One gives English->Pinyin and the other gives Pinyin->English.My class used the whole series of textbook, workbook, character workbook and online audio exercises. After 6 months of studying I spent a month in China. Great trip thanks to this book series! One note of caution: Books are available in traditional and simplified. Make sure you buy the one you/your course requires.
I have been taking Chinese at my college for quite some time and have finally gotten to level 2. well level 2 is kinda a disappointment. If u are familiar with the level 1 books you know that the go slow enough to understand while building on previous lessons. Now i understand this may be level 2, but there are up to 50 words a lesson in this thing, that's 50 words not 50 characters a lesson. so one might become overwhelm by tons of characters a lesson causing this person to quickly memorize the characters instead of actually seeking to understand them. But that isn't my only complaint. The author will use words that aren't taught until later lessons, this happens numerous times. for example, I am on lesson 8 right now and there are words from lesson 10. I just can feel like the person who wrote level 1 knew what they were doing and level 2 didn't.
This is a solid textbook for students starting their second year of Chinese studies. Having both versions of the characters side by side in the vocabulary sections can get a bit confusing, as can the dual multi page lesson dialogues with traditional on the left and simplified on the right over the course of several pages.Don't let these minor issues discourage you, though. This book is great, it has plenty of gramatical examples and explains the concepts clearly and completely.
The character workbook is pretty well set up, I like how it gives you the stroke order. However, I didn't like this series because of the traditional, it made me fisheye to try and study both the way it was set up.
These are great textbooks! I used these textbooks all through Chinese 101, 102, 201, and 202 at a community college and at Brigham Young University (which is a great school for foreign languages) and I ordered a set to take with me when I taught English in China for a semester. Very clear and easy to understand, exercises are helpful and greatly improve writing and reading skills. The reading and listening portions weren't always that clear and I sometimes felt that these exercises weren't that helpful when trying to learn everyday conversation skills, but on the whole these books are extremely helpful.
I mean, it's pretty much just a book where you practice writing the characters. Not much to go wrong here. However, stroke order is provided, which is useful, and although I am not studying traditional characters, it's nice to have a reference to them.
I got this textbook for a better price than I could find anywhere else online and it came quickly in the mail. It's in perfectly new condition and even arrived faster than the estimation made. I couldn't be more satisfied.
this is a character workbook, and you get what you would expect. I find no fault with it, but don't see a point in it being required for class because, at this point in their career, most chinese students will have a very good idea about how to write characters. I can write most characters when I see them, and I can practice them on lined or graph paper, so I really don't see a point in this book existing. That said, it's a nice book.
