The story is set in the Yukon during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush—a period in which strong sled dogs were in high demand. The novel's central character is a dog named Buck, a domesticated dog living at a ranch in the Santa Clara Valley of California as the story opens. Stolen from his home and sold into service as sled dog in Alaska, he reverts to a wild state. Buck is forced to fight in order to dominate other dogs in a harsh climate. Eventually he sheds the veneer of civilization, relying on primordial instincts and learned experience to emerge as a leader in the wild.Top 100 Best-Ever Classics Books: US –> http://amzn.to/1K9ZzqCUK –> http://amzn.to/1L3UgOBCanada –> http://amzn.to/1i02L1h

I first read this Jack London book fifty-five years ago. It inspired me to read more books and especially all of the London books. I enjoyed the raw animus, the Alaska wilderness, and the struggle to survive. I love adventure, the outdoors, dogs, hunting, fishing, and hiking. Consequently, this book was a perfect start for me.Buck is a beloved character and the book is very well written - so well, that I could suggest it as a writing clinic in itself! Highly recommended. It's "The Call of the Wild". What more can be said than has already been said? This is one of the greatest classics of all time. I've read it several times over the years, most recently as a Literature study with my 14 yr. old son. We loved, loved, loved it. Couldn't put it down. And there is so much for a teen to take from this book.... themes of trust and betrayal, love and loyalty, greed and pride. Buy it. Read it. Enjoy it. It's a masterpiece.

About a tame dog who goes through a series of trials and becomes wild.

What can I say about great literature?

You will cry after the first two pages.
