This series of books is great for reminding you of subjects long forgotten. My only wish with this book is that more literature components (character development, story arc, figuritive writing, etc) was not included. Literature is an important component to common core competencies and would not require to much space to completely cover the subject.
Great reference book to have in your home library, especially if you have school-age children. It helps to break down rules of grammar, punctuation, and spelling. It includes a section on communication skills in areas of debates, writing a script, writing for the web, "layout and presentation features", etc. However, the communications skills section is very general, comprised of basic information which does not extend into anything in-depth, but it is a good starter. Overall good, general reference book.
As a homeschooling Mom, this is a must. My kids love that it is easy to find info, my husband even uses it when writing a paper for school. We all need a little help with grammar now and then and this is the perfect go to resource.
I'm 50 and back in school, I didn't buy this for my kids, I bought it for myself and I think it's a great reference to remind myself of all those things I used to know. It's laid out well, and the colorful presentation makes not such a drag to look something up.
This line of books is fantastic, and this book in particular is just wonderful. It's about as engaging and clear as any book could be on the structure and function of the English language. I only wish the DK company would do an animated DVD set of this book.
I don't see how visual learners would benefit as the "visuals" are all text arranged in no specific or way that would help anyone to learn. This book is filled with pages of overcrowded visuals. Poor presentation and design of information. I cannot focus on the material because the pages are so incredibly busy with very little white space to give you pause. There are arrows everywhere, boxed in text, bubbled in text, text text- text. No memory aids. There is no clear organization of the information on the page(s) - it is all crammed together with no sense to it. I cannot imagine how a kid would be able to process the information on the page. Their eyes would be darting everywhere with no way to make sense of the information presented.
One of the most outstanding books ever written in order to educate and enlighten the most difficult to teach students, as well as with adults who might be well versed in the English language, but who might not have been taught or never fully comprehended much that should have been learned during their grade school educations.I wish the authors or those with similar abilities would write the same kind of books on Math, Physics, various aspects of Science, Philosophy, and then into more specific books on say Chemistry, Engineering, Astronomy, etc., as those kind of books, if done in a similar manner to that of the Language Arts Book, would allow for a better understanding of basics by a far greater number of grade school as well as college/university level students than is presently being reported. I am a total grammar nerd and I LOVE this book. I was dismayed to find out, just skimming through it, that I'm speaking incorrectly when I say "aren't I" instead of "am I not" and "everyone bring their..." instead of "everyone bring his or her...". I'm sure I may have made an error in punctuation while writing this review, so I'll have to go through the book more carefully to identify all the areas in which I need to improve. The presentation is visually appealing, well laid out, and full of useful examples. This is a resource that kids can (and will) use.
