I got tired of reading books that told me the specifics of why this was happening to my son instead of telling me how to go about fixing it. This book gives you specific ways to start your child on the path to speech when encountering delays. It doesn't tell you what synapses of the brain aren't functioning...it tells you how to engage your child to want to speak with easy daily routines. A definite awesome read for anyone who has a child with speech delay, no matter how trivial or severe.

The book was pretty good. After doing so much reading of other materials, I did already know most of what was said. It did give some pointers on areas that was new to me. I had bought both this book and the DVD. The DVD covers most of the same material as the book. I would buy one but NOT both. I wish I knew that ahead to save my money!

This is the text book for the Hanen Project. Hanen is a course that parents of speech delay children can go through to learn to speak with their children. This book is an excellent guide to understanding how to get through to your child. The methods used are simple and successful. This book is best utilized with the Hanen course, but taking the course is not necessary. The book has helped me break into my childs world and now we can play and he can say some words. I highly recommend this book if you are unable to communicate with your child.

My almost 3 year old only has about 10 words. Since we started trying the methods in the guide. He is more receptive to trying to say the word and we are having more fun. It is no longer work but part of our day and fun.

I purchased the textbook while I was taking the Hanen class offered through my county. If you can take a course in addition to reading the book that would be ideal, but its a wonderful resource on its own. The books is a quick and easy read, its not overly technical, the writing is very simplistic. There are plenty of examples of the strategies and techniques to help you figure out their key points. On a side note, it is written with a really nice tone of empathy. It is clear that the writers realize that many of the parents who are reading this book may have kids that have a variety of issues, and that speech may not be their only area of challenge/delay but they nicely ask you to examine things you might be doing (unknowingly) to further enable/impede your child. The book is written with a VERY encouraging tone, with lots of emphasis on helping your child reach their full potential and also pointing out the importance of being realistic with your expectations, and understanding the different stages that kids have to go through to acquire better language skills. Overall a fabulous book -- its a great investment in helping your child and a fabulous course to take if you have the option available to you.

We took the Hanen class which uses this book. It's a fantastic resource -- I recommend findng a class too if you can; ours is offered free through the state for children who need it.Our son went from being completely toy-focused and hard to interact with to now initiating communication and really opening up to us. His speech has also improved dramatically during this time. While our ultimate goals have to do more with articulation, we found this book (and class) to be a great start to increasing communication with our son, with an improvement in articulation as a side effect.

I agree with some of the other reviewers, in that a lot of books aimed towards speech delays in children focus on labeling the problem and scaring parents even more. This book just focuses on the delay, and guides the parent(s) to what point their child's communication is and ways to make it progress through interaction and play. I found it extraordinary and the pictures make it more involving to read, and understand rather than a text book. Kudos to the creator(s) of this book, its really something.

My wife and I purchased this book to go along with a class we were taking to help our 2 year old son increase his vocabulary. At the begining of the class, our son only spoke about 2-3 words, after he was up to about 20. The class was based on the book, so the book alone will do you wonders if you are worried about your childs development. My only recommendation is to get the book early, as it will teach you ways to help your child from an early age. I wish we would have known about this book a year earlier.
