The book has a wide remit. It aspires to cover many of the major topics within women's and gender studies in the US. It reprints several recent research papers that the editors/authors consider significant. The phrase women's liberation figures prominently in several chapters. We see that the current status of women in the US is vastly freer than in recent decades, triggered in large part by the social upheavals of the 1960s.One topic is the beauty ideal. This is still dominated in the media by the perceptions and stereotypes of a slender white female. Only gradually are other ethnicities appearing as alternate ideals. Another related topic is the problem of obesity and being overweight. Contrasting views are aired. Some feminists argue that there should be greater acceptance of size variation, instead of one ideal. The counterargument proposed is largely by health professionals, who point out that obesity triggers many deleterious effects, like increased risk of diabetes and heart attack and cancer. There is an irony that should be apparent to the reader. The esthetic acceptance of different body weights as a function of ethnicity is commendable from the viewpoint of a multiethnic society. But this very acceptance can lead to an acceptance of greater morbidity and mortality for some ethnic groups. The book does not attempt to resolve this, but to bring it to the forefront of the reader's attention.Another topic is the persistent wage gap between men and women. Over decades, progress has been glacial in narrowing the gap. Some historical observations are proferred. But there is no expectation of any major change in the status quo.
In the description it said there was slight cover damage. That would have been acceptable, but the book is also folded and damaged on the inside. The pages have folds that run through the entire book. Some pages also have small tears on the edges. I paid 60$ for my copy, and it was definitely not worth that much with all of the damage.
