The Essential Feminist Reader is exactly that - stories/essays/letters involving the history of feminism and its journey into modern times. Is this a book full of theories and psychological jargon? No, although there are a few essays that are written for the "advanced" feminist, if there is such a thing. I've cited this book in many analytical essays for professors as well as presentations for lower-level, undergraduate students.Simply put - this is an excellent start for ANY person who is interested in feminism and/or women's history.
I purchased this book for a graduate level class, Contemporary Feminist Thought. It did not disappoint. The background blurbs at the beginning of each piece helped to set the stage and context for the reading to come.
Freedman's anthology of primary sources is invaluable. Her global perspective is unmatched in both this reader and its companion No Turning Back, which I also highly recommend.
This book definitely is a must read for everyone interested in women's rights in our world to understand where that terrible discrimination had started from. Sadly sexism is still with us today. As wonderfully put by another excellent book I've recently read Beasts of Prey: The Hard Truth about Men, some men use their powers to cheat on women, trick, and manipulate them to gain their control in society and culture. Such men have not progressed from the situation discussed by the The Second SexSome men, like the sexist Trump Crippled America: How to Make America Great Again, still believe that stereotyping women (like what he did with Megyn Kelly when he mentioned her menstruation in an interview) and denigrating them (like what he did with Hillary Clinton when he compared her with a barking dog in his ads) is the right way to go!Just because such manipulators have money and power in their hands, they strike hard to stop those beautiful, intelligent and influential women from gaining control on the same resources in society they assume to be their own!
i took a womans studies class and decided to get this book after the semester ended to broaden my reading. this book is good for getting a wide range in history of womens studies, but probably would have prefered a more modern selection.
Must read for all feminists - scratch that, must read for everyone! Great selection of feminist writings, both literature and essays.
Truly as the title says, essential. My favorite book I read in college. Bought for my sister as an introduction to feminist writing as well!
Wonderful collection of Feminist writings with speeches, short stories, excerpts from novels and government documents. Spanning from 1405 and ending in 2004. There is something in there for everyone and a great way to introduce you to feminist writing.
