Concise and readable, this is an excellent resource for someone who is just beginning their adventure in anesthesia and doesn't want to feel completely lost in the operating room. Intentionally not as in depth as the more definitive anesthesia texts, this book is a nice overview to lay a groundwork and then you can delve deeper into the bigger texts once you have your feet under you. Dr. Steiner was previously a paramedic, so this book is written in a very practical "what do I need to know now and why" point of view that does a good job covering most of the basics without putting you to sleep (pun intended)
Every single person rotating on anesthesia should read this book before they begin - whether you're a medical student, anesthesia assistant, SRNA, rotating resident or even a budding anesthesia resident. It is a quick, easy read that can be done in 1-2 days. My program director bought us this book as we do a 5-month rotation on anesthesia -- all I can say is that I wish I had it on day 1. It reviews some of the basic physiology and pharmacology involved in anesthesia, but more importantly it covers the various methods and materials that you will see in clinical anesthesia. Starting an anesthesia rotation is unlike any other type of rotation - there is much to learn and it comes at you fast. This book will prepare you for your first week so that you are not entirely clueless and can progress with your anesthesia education much faster. This book can make you look like an anesthesia superstar from day 1!
Excellent introductory text in anesthesiology. I highly recommend reading this book if you're a 3rd or 4th year med student interested in doing anesthesia and it's a must read if you're about to do an audition rotation at an anesthesia residency program. You'll look like an all star if you take the 90 minutes to read this book! Baby Miller is also a must-have but it's way too dense to get through quickly and it isn't very useful without any clinical experience. Dr. Steiner's book does an excellent job filling the gap between step 2 level knowledge and residency-required baby Miller.
Fantastic book. Excellent source for someone beginning their anesthesiology career. I think it is a must have text for anyone who is beginning a medical school clerkship. I am a CA1 and wish I had this during my medical school rotations!
Excellent introduction to anesthesia topics. Easy read. Highly recommend.
