this is a good rendition of a much-written-about voyage. i picked up the book at the local library and it lay on the table for a week or so, as many history books come across as either turgidly written for kudos in academia, or descend to the semi-illiterate and disorganised. when i finally started to read the book, i was into chapter three before i realised just how easy to read the book was, and how well the information was imparted. there are no footnotes, but a comprehensive series of annexes exists at the back of the book for those who are inclined that way. the only criticism i had was that there was no extended bibliography as an annex, although some titles were listed in the intro.

I've read at least a dozen books on The First Fleet (research for an upcoming novel), and each one gave a different aspect of the voyage. This was to be expected when about half the stories were personal journals. This one is the most comprehensive book I've found on the subject. Rob Mundle has woven many journals and historical records together, kept his timeline taut yet colorful, everything in order yet well-blended, to provide a literary masterpiece. If you want to know about The First Fleet of convicts to Australia, from the early stages of the idea, to the preparations, to the voyage and landing itself, this is your best source. Dani Haviland, author.

This is a great read for somebody interested in Australian and maritime history. A fleet of 11 vessels sailed into the virtual unknown with the intent of setting up a new British colony on the other side of the world -at Botany Bay. A huge achievement for Arthur Phillip and his team described in detail by author Mundle. Written from a yachtsman's point of view it makes you realise the magnitude of the venture and the problems that Phillip confronted. It left me deeply impressed by Phillip and his team skill, determination and quality. The first fleeters would be surprised if he could see Sydney Cove now !

A very well researched part of our history that holds your interest to the final chapter.I recommend everyone who has an interest in our beginnings as a nation should read this outstanding book and congratulations to Rob Mundle on his contribution.

An insightful and informative depiction of early seamanship. A fantastic read which was great to read whilst completing a circumnavigation of Tasmania on a yachat. I would throughly recommend it.

An excellent read. Thoroughly reserched and written, I would highly-recommend this book to any with an interest in'where we come from'.

Interesting account of the first voyage to Australia and the trials these people went through to establish a settlement there.

Mostly a cut and paste of the research of others and hardly riveting prose style but a useful short read on the subject.
