Excellent book with specific detailed instructions on creating a vocabulary program that improves students' reading performances. HOWEVER, DO NOT ORDER IT ON KINDLE. The author has excellent templates and charts which are IMPOSSIBLE to read on a kindle. Well written informative book that is documented with researach based data.
I picked this book up on a whim. I hadn't heard anything about it, but was looking for a way to increase vocabulary comprehension in my classroom. I loved, loved, loved this book. So often I will buy a book and read it and think wow this is great but you didn't tell me how to make it work in MY classroom. Not this book! This book provides organizers, explicit instructions on games, classroom implementation, and a plethora of options to adapt to your classroom. Plus it provides information on differentiation for both primary and secondary elementary education classrooms. I have tried a few of these things in my classroom and my students loved them. I have not seen them so engaged and excited about vocabulary before. AND it does NOT require hours of preparation! This next year I am going to start at the beginning of the year and adapt it to all subject areas. I would recommend this to any teacher or parent! I can't sing enough praises for this book.
Great stuff can be found in this book! I'm lucky enough to actually have seen this vocabulary instruction in real life, but the authors describe it so well, you could do it without the real experience. It's an easy practical guide on ways to create a classroom word-loving students and enhance their achievement while having fun!
My students are really learning a lot of new words by adding the synonyms and antonyms to each word they learn. They also love the games, especially the link up game that helps them make connections. Thanks!
The concept behind "Word Nerds" is sound, the delivery of the information is terrible. This book is poorly written and awkward at best. It reads like a textbook and is not is in a format that translates easily to the classroom. Plus, as a first-grade teacher, the text offers little for K-2 educators.There are many books out there about teaching vocabulary. This is not one I would recommend. I will be returning this book.
This book has some good ideas for making vocabulary instruction more meaningful for kids. My students really need help in this area, so I am glad to have it as a resource.
A teacher friend of mine recommended this book. After reading the reviews, I knew I had to read it. I am happy to say that I was not disappointed.Wow! It makes vocabulary instruction make sense. The writers lay out a plan (either a 5 day or 2 wk plan) that provides structure and flexibility. As I am no longer in the classroom, I have been watching the teacher that recommended the book to me, follow the plan. Her students are doing fantastic--and they are loving vocabulary! My only criticism with the book, if I had to find one, is that I don't really see it being implemented without some major changes in kindergarten, but really, it would probably still work!!
I haven't finished reading yet, but it already has me very excited to start implementing ideas in the classroom. I am a word nerd at heart, so I am hoping to create little word nerds in my fifth grade classroom.
