I was pleased to add this into our language arts program mid way through this school year. The activities are simple enough for the kids to do with little assistance. If you don't want to do a formal latin or greek program, this is a nice short cut to some of the benefits.

I was surprised by the depth of instruction to each assignment, making it much easier for my 9 yo to learn. She thought her assignments would be daunting since each of them is about 4 pages long so far but has found that she can still get them done quickly with only a little bit of help from me

I have one for my son, who has been using it for a year, since he tested for the GATE program. The book has a short list of root words for him to memorize, fill in the blank exercises, and making up sentences with the new words. I just bought another copy for my younger daughter, so she too can write in the book. They both like the exercises because they're not too hard, but the children definitely learn new words.

I am looking forward to starting this with my homeschooled 4th grader. However, I've attached a photo of the first page, which is very confusing. For the record, none of the other early lessons are like this; they are all completely clear and logical. But look at the first page. It's about roots (second lesson's about prefixes, third is about suffixes, all this makes sense). They show a prefix, *peri, and three roots, *micro, *scope, and *tele. The words formed by these 4 elements are periscope, microscope, and telescope. Now, the casual user would think "Um, aren't there 3 prefixes, and one root, and we're demonstrating the you can take one root (scope) and change the meaning by using different prefixes?" The prefixes are peri, micro and tele; the root is scope. At the bottom, we combine these 4 elements in the way you'd expect, with 3 prefixes and one root. Now I'm sure the authors of the book would sit me down and lecture me about the Greek meaning of "mycros" and language evolution and blah blah blah (for the record, I have a Master's degree in Linguistics, and I just "yadda yadda yadda'd" my way through thousands of years of language evolution). But if it's true that on some historic level micro and tele are roots and not prefixes, well that means they chose the wrong example for their book. When you get to the subsequent lessons, they are not like this. They are logical and clear and there is no confusion. I have no idea why the first page is so odd.

I purchased this book to incorporate in our homeschool language arts for our thrid graer. The book is laid out well and is a great start, but I felt it was lacking and incomplete. The lessons are extremely short. There are only a few questions for each root word which at this age is really basic. There should be more practice to go along with the lessons. I can however, easily search the web and my paid worksheet sites and see if I can find more items to go with each lesson. The little charts that show the prefix, root, or suffix and then the meaning is easy to understand and use. It other gives a basis for a child to learn more. The book is basic black and white. I would like to see the charts in color so they stand out more. There is an answer key for the lessons at the end of the book for easy reference. The book is meant to be both the student and teacher copy which is the type of book I prefer as buying two books can be costly.

I am a special education teacher. I haven't started using it yet but for my purposes this will need some supplements combined with support. Not independent work, will definitely need direct instruction and guidance to understand and complete.
