Like the title says, this book is meant for a beginning English learner. I used it last year in the first year of my adult English Learners class. If there was a lesson in this book that corresponded with the theme of my lesson of the week, I copied the blackline master of the picture page of this "Vocabulary Builder". This page included 16 picture boxes with each box illustrating a word or phrase. The second page was a translation of each box into English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Russion, and Vietnamese, as well as "Teaching Suggestion" and "Activities". I used this page to reinforce the lesson, usually with a lighter format including Bingo or a similar game. It became a break in the seriousness of the class, while still continuing the learning process. The book never failed to spark a conversation or question from a class member's daily life. I have just purchased this book because the set of masters provided to me was missing some lessons, and I felt the book was valuable enough that I want to have the complete set for future use.
This is a must have for anyone who teaches ESL. I loaned mine out when I became an instructional support teacher but am now back in the classroom and can't remember who I gave it to! I have the workbook that goes with it and the 2nd edition, Practical Vocabulary Builder, which goes hand-in-hand with the BVB. Whereas the BVB has sports, the PVB has the equipment for the sports.
These vocab pictures are a resource in a pinch, but in dire need of an update... when was the last time you saw a rotary phone?
