Had to purchase this textbook for a masters course. It provided a lot of activities to incorporate teaching vocabulary, text comprehension, etc. Definitely usable. I don't think I'll be keeping this text however, because I'm a choral music director. That does not mean I can't use the lessons and concepts in the book. I just think someone in a core classroom may find it more useful.
I wanted to give this 4.5 starts because I really, really like it and recommend it, but there is one thing I would like more of.I attended one of Janet Allen's workshops and she is a wonderful educator and facilitator. I thought I had all her books until I enrolled in an online course for vocabulary instruction and this was the required text. I love everything about this book. The exercises are timely and fun; the examples are relevant and cross-curricular. I especially like the accompanying CD with the graphic organizers in English *and* Spanish. The only thing the book lacks--the one thing I would like more of--are student samples. I would like to see the organizers in use by students.
This is a nice book with excellent examples. I won't say it is the best book I have ever used for reading instruction but good none the less.The purchase was flawless. I received the book in a timely manner in the condition described.
If you are an aspiring or current teacher, you should have this book in your personal library. Full of potential tools that can help your students understand and better engage.
It was a required textbook for a master of education, reading endorsement. It served it's purpose to inform, like most textbooks.
Very good collections of graphic organizers and good discussions on how to use them. I use this with my students every day.
