SUMMARY---In a phrase, "This book is interesting to browse, but it doesn't give you a 'powerful' vocabulary". Basically, I keep this book by my toilet. It's entertaining to browse through, but most of the words it offers up are either too common (meaning the average high schooler would probably know them) or too obscure (meaning that they would never be used outside of, well, a book purporting that it'll help build a 'powerful' vocabulary).FULL REVIEW---My Expectations:I'm an essay editor and tutor. My main concentration these days appears to be papers in the sciences, but, in the past, I did a lot of editing and tutoring in Creative Writing, Philosophy, and English. I've worked with students ranging from Grade 10 to university grad studies. I'm constantly looking for books to both show to my students and to amuse myself with. I picked up Fiske WordPower during a trip to America (I'm from Canada) because I thought it might be a good way to pass the time and help students with a weaker vocabulary. The Good:This book is great for browsing. It's set up in a very informal, chatty style that makes it a fun way to read up on some overly erudite vocabulary. The sample sentences they use are especially entertaining. The words are grouped loosely by meaning or function. For example, one of the chapters is titled, "Down with Everybody: Words for Name-calling".The Bad:As a learning tool, this book falls short in many areas. I reckon the developmental editor for this thing didn't quite do his part in accurately targeting the book to an audience. The people who need to learn what "dispute" means are probably not the same ones who need to learn what "obstreperous" means (yes, I pulled the words out of the same general "level").
