This manual is the highly recommended companion to CPRT: A 10-Session Filial Therapy Model. Accompanied by a CD-Rom of training materials, which allows for ease of reproduction and enhanced usability, the workbook will help the facilitator of the filial training and will provide a much needed educational outline to allow filial therapists to pass their knowledge on to parents. The Treatment Manual provides a comprehensive outline and detailed guidelines for each of the ten sessions, facilitating the training process for both the parents and the therapist. The book contains a designed structure for the therapy training described in the book, with child-centered play therapy principles and skills, such as reflective listening, recognizing and responding to children’s feelings, therapeutic limit setting, building children’s self-esteem, and structuring required weekly play sessions with their children using a special kit of selected toys. Bratton and her co-authors recommend teaching aids, course materials, and activities for each session, as well as worksheets for parents to complete between sessions. By using this workbook and CD-Rom to accompany the CPRT book, filial therapy leaders will have a complete package for use in training parents to act as therapeutic agents with their own children. Dr. Landreth and Ms. Bratton have compiled decades of research, experience and practice into an outstanding book that enables any therapist (willing to devote the time necessary to learn and practice these practical skills) to teach parents to do play therapy with their own children. CPRT can help parents to step back and relax and enjoy their children, all the while encouraging their children towards positive self-esteem, decision-making, self control, boundaries, and so much more; not to mention a closer relationship between parent and child. I really like this model of therapy for parents with young children. It provides support for parents, as well as special playtime for children. It includes a CD-Rom with all the handouts, and manuals for parents and therapists. My only complaint is that it is not completely compatible with a Mac. You can download the documents on the CD, but the program with the table of contents doesn't run. Also, including some sample play therapy videos with the manual would make it more complete. Overall, I plan to use this manual with parents, and find it a good addition to my collection.
This book is based on the premise that you are teaching a parenting class-group which is not clear in the description. And the parent manual is extremely juvenile. Its almost embarrassing to give the handouts to parents I am working with because it is written at about a 4th grade leve.
For the Kindle Buyers:You are not buying the CPRT model book as seen here. The Kindle version is the manual. Great if you're practicing, but I ordered the model book for research purposes, and ended up wasting $30. The manual has none of the overview or background information.
an excellent resource for mental health workers wanting to help parents connect with their children. An easy ten session model that is accompanied with handouts and other resources.
I really like the materials and think that it will really benefit the children when their parents get on board and have confidence in how they can't help their own child. I am giving a lower score because the book is promised with a CD-rom and I never received the CD rom. It is going to be a pain to copy the pages out of the workbook. Very disappointed and misled!
I would have given this 5 stars for the content and quality, but removed a star because of the binding. This is a nice paperback edition. I was looking for the original yellow coil binding with tabbed dividers. This is a manual, not a textbook. It needs to be coil bound for working use. Please indicate when this edition is available.
I haven't read very much but the intro show that this workbook is intended for therapists to help them lead sessions based on the book. I thought I was buying the book, but I wasn't and so far the workbook isn't much help without it. I wish I didn't buy this, and even if I needed it, it would have been more helpful to have it on paper instead of an ebook-plus its supposed to come with a CD ROM if you buy the paper book.
