I was expecting this to be the average, boring textbook;however, I was happily surprised to discover that the author had a very different perspective than my other textbooks. Mullaly espouses a progressive conception of social work that I personally found refreshing.
Mullaly provides a great overview about political ideologies, which he terms 'paradigms', as well as creating a picture of what social work practice would look like within that particular paradigm. I can really appreciate the comprehensive overview. I also admire Mullaly's commitment to a progressive form of social work practice. Painting a picture of social work research and practice that is mindful of social injustice is helpful for the up and coming practitioner and scholar. However, the content of this book and the argument that the author makes is detracted from by his own bias and antipathy toward ideology other than his own. This book was not a presentation of differing viewpoints, but rather a scathing criticism of conservatism and liberalism toward the promotion of social democratic and Marxism. Overall, the book is a good read, but I doubt it should be read as an MSW policy text without a supplemental text to provide a better-rounded comparison of ideologies and policy practice arena. Social work professionals are educated to be critical thinkers - offering this text alone to students would not provide them with a comprehensive 'picture' of social policy, thereby inhibiting critical analysis of the current policy practice environment.
