Great book for its time (first published in the 19th century), especially interesting for detailed analysis of Oneida, perhaps the most famous utopian colony before the twentieth century and Twin Oaks colony which was inspired by BF Skinner. If you're looking for something more up to day in terms of what's happened in the intervening century and a half in terms of American literature, social thought, and political history, see Peter Swirski's "American Utopia and Social Engineering" and "Ars Americana, Ars Politica", both very recent and both written in a more engaging style than the musty academic style of Nordhoff.
