Titles in Barron's Painless series are designed for middle school and high school students, helping them excel in subjects they might expect to be either hopelessly boring or excruciatingly difficult. The authors are all experienced teachers, adept at winning the hearts and minds of adolescents, and skillful in adding a light, humorous touch to even the heaviest and grimmest topics. This book opens with a general description of government and a comparison of democracy as practiced by the founding fathers and how it operates in today's America. The author goes on to discuss the Constitution as our basis of government, civil liberties and civil rights, the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of the federal government, elections and political parties, how public policy is created and shaped, and how each citizen can become involved in the process of self-government. The book includes quizzes with answer keys.

BUT... it says it's for middle school grades, I would suggest it's more early high school level. There is a lot of good basic information about how our government is set up, but it definitely puts a liberal slant on a lot of it. The "self-check" type exercises that are scattered through the chapters are set up to check just the past few pages of reading. There is not really any overall reviews or things that build upon the past readings. The reading level is definitely somewhat higher than typical middle school.

This book is great. This is not college material. It was designed for those who weren't paying attention in school, well, they were paying attention to the clock with one ear cocked for the bell, but certainly not the teacher. Now, you're feeling a sense of adult responsibility thinking "How can I not know more about my own government?" In a succinct, straightforward, unembellished and pretty much politically unbiased format (chapter summaries and questions included for reinforcement), this will get you on board with the origin, evolution, structure and function of our government.

I wanted something that just covered the basics of American Government, and also had some quizzes throughout it for my homeschooled son to use. This book does all that.

Wow! I wish I had this book when I was in High School! Painless is the perfect adjective to describe this book. Everything is broken down into little bits of information for the reader. My son loves this, as he is able to grasp the concept of how our government works. Which is the whole point of this book. HIGHLY recommend this book as homeschooling High School curriculum!

Painless American Government (Painless Series) ...I purchased Painless Earth Science, History, Study Techniques, Grammar, Life Science, American Government, Spelling, Pre-Algebra, & Geometry for my daughter to help prepare her for high school. She hated me for weeks, but this series has tremendously helped her with her transition from middle school to an advanced magnet academy for high school. These books are one of the best educational tools I have ever purchased. By week 2 she was excited to show me what she had learned each day. We will fortunately be using these for my son when he is old enough to use them.

I used this as a guide to teach my small class of high-school homeschoolers government. Very entertaining and lots of helpful exercises to help students grasp and remember concepts. Written in an entertaining and accessible way.

Easy and great book to use for a great outline of American Government. My 13 year old wanted to learn more about AG and honestly this was recommended but I didn't really know anything about this series however with the price I was willing to give it a chance, So glad that I did. I loved the straight forward learning and the humor that it presented. Also a huge bonus was the answers in the back!

If you need a crash course on any one subject these books are what you are looking for. Very in depth and an easy read. Good work
