I already own The Little Brown Handbook 9th edition. I wanted something compact (the Little Brown Handbook is a brick) and of course something up to date. I also wanted something that reminded me of the basics needed for APA citation and something that could help me review my grammar and punctuation. In regards to APA documentation, I noticed that it does have a wider range of Web and other electronic sources examples than my 9th edition, this comes to no surprise since my 9th edition is a couple of years old.One of the great things about this this Essential Handbook is that it has highlighted sections that teach you what one's common grammar mistakes are and how to correct them. It also has numerous up-to-date sections in regards to APA, MLA, Chicago, and CSE documentation. This book has a little bit of everything and I am very content with this purchase. Please keep in mind that this is a compact edition of the actual book; therefore, some things are not in full detail.
I'm in my mid-50's attending college for the first time. My Comp I instructor recommended this book and it's been a life-saver. I love all the different categories and considerations. It makes for a quick, simple and reliable reference. I keep it next to me whenever I'm doing homework of any type. I use Post-It self-stick tabs to write on for quick references.
I liked it becasue it has alot of useful information for me to look up on the spot. In college it more then used because you dont want to get into trouble for not citing someone. You could get exspelled from school or something. Which teacher always tell you so you have to have the proof, so this book helps with that along with other useful information.
Great writing reference book for students! Contains definitions, instructions and multiple example scenarios for when to use certain things in writing. It is a very small handy book.

If you are looking for a good Christmas present for a college bound friend, consider buying this book. I like the spiral bound because it is very easy to navigate from page to page.
