This small book is intended to be a rapid and concise introduction to basic ideas that form the central concepts of cultural anthropology. The format of the book is to have a short chapter on each of the major aspects of anthropology such as: culture, religion, politics, economics, kinship, marriage, and capitalism. Each subject is given a few pages of discussion (around ten) and then a bibliography for further reading. In these few pages, the reader will grasp the central ideas that represent the current thinking in the field. It has been successfully used as a textbook by making this the cental theme of the class, but then supplementing the study with a significant amount of outside reading. This is the third edition of this book. it has several sections expanded to reflect greater depth in areas like neoliberalism, transnational citizenship, human rights, and so on.

The authors of this book emphasize that it should be used in conjunction with collections of ethnographies and other volumes. With that in mind, this is an exceptionally clear, useful, and well-considered book about cultural anthropology. The authors have done an outstanding job of making complex theories and ideas accessible in a short amount of space.I recommend this book for anyone seeking to learn the overall outlines or remind themselves of the major ideas in cultural anthropology. I am VERY glad I bought it!

I love textbooks that pack a lot of information into a short amount of pages, especially when they're cheap. I like a book that doesn't waste my time, especially since I've got multiple textbooks to read in a semester. This was a good one, and I felt by the end of it that I'd learned quite a bit. It doesn't present everything in the field, of course, but for an introductory book, it's one that I like and would recommend for someone seeking a greater understanding of cultural anthropology.

I had to use this book for my required introduction to anthropology class. As a computer science major, I was slightly interested at best. For someone who isn't all that great at learning about subjects like anthropology, this book was great. It was an easy read while being very informative. The charts in the book, while minimal were good small summaries of important information.A caution to those that need the fifth version of the book:While the fourth edition is nearly identical to the fifth edition, there is ONE WHOLE CHAPTER MISSING IN THIS VERSION, a chapter on science on health. Because of this, some of the chapters are also numbered differently between the versions. Keep this in mind if you decide to get this version instead of a newer one.

This book provides an excellent overview of modern anthropology and it's history. One of its virtues is it's conciseness. There's no fat here. I would have no hesitation in using it in an introductory cultural anthropology course. That said, I don't think that this is an appropriate book if you plan on using as the only text for your course. It's conciseness doesn't leave room for many examples. It's mostly theory and needs to be supplemented by additional ethnographic materials. When used in conjunction with ethnographies, other readings and videos, this would be an excellent choice.

the book seems ok, but for one problem. it states in the preface that there is an online study guide. there isn't one. i contacted the publisher and was told there is no online companion website for the book. which makes me wonder, if they made that mistake, what other mistakes are in the book? luckily i only paid a few cents for it. buyer beware.

I don't know if it was the professor or the book.nut i enjoyed the class. It is easy to read, very concise...buy it, you won't regret it.

I needed this book as a textbook for my anthropology class and it met all my expectations. I received it in great condition I am really satisfied with this item.
