I found this book to be intriguing. Published in 2011 it's hard to keep up with new authors coming out every 6 months with a new read. Very informational for those who don't know about or read urban fiction. This book needs to be published yearly like the writer's market books. I will definitely use this as a reference. Most of the books listed I already have read BUT....it's good as a reference tool.
...which is what I just spent the past couple of months doing. I also used Vanessa Morris' The Readers' Advisory Guide to Street Literature, which does have useful background on the genre itself, but for categorization of titles under genres, plot summaries, and great author, title, and subject indexes for finding what you needed about the books you wanted to add to the collection, and honest appraisals of the books, this was the winner hands down. I feel confident the items I have selected from it, as well as the knowledge it gave me about the genre as a whole that enabled me to find equally good newer items by other authors, has helped me build a core collection my patrons will really like.
