In Maine the spirit of ambition has always run high. Whether it emanates from the clear and invigorating breath of the hills, from the romantic reaches of the restless sea, or from the unseen heart of creation, it is found there in profusion. Many of its votaries have won the laurel wreath and slipped through earth's postern portal to further conquests.It is difficult to select typical characters from the hundreds who have gained prominence along similar lines of activity in state and world affairs. Opinion differs as to qualifications. In the list presented some reader may look in vain for his ideal, but it was not proposed to consider those who are little known and unique. Neither are eccentric characters eligible as such. It would not be strange if, from the annals of three progressive centuries, some worthy name should have been inadvertently omitted. Doubtless, when the full test of time has intervened, another list of equal merit can be found but, for the present, the true standards for selection must be applied, necessarily, to those mortals who have left a few straggling finger prints on the enduring threshold of eternity.It was the original intention that no living person should be considered in this volume on the ancient theory that it is unsafe to estimate any man's full achievement before his demise, since he may undo in the last hour all that he has accomplished in a lifetime. That plan of exclusion has been followed with but one exception, where the subject of the sketch represents an unusual type and strands in a class by himself.Biography is a really fascinating way to present history in terms of individual effort, and certain phases of the state's record are illuminated by this means, including Colonial, Revolutionary and Civil War periods.Maine has had its full share of artists, authors, educators, historians, humorists, inventors, martyrs, musicians, patriots, poets, reformers, scientists, soldiers and statesmen. It is hoped that this inspiring array may encourage other aspirants for public service to face the uncertain future with renewed confidence in a successful outcome.

Maine is one of the States I always want to visit, just haven’t had a chance yet. But thank you for such great book. The reason I love this book is because I get to know Maine from all these great influential people. The whole picture of Maine and her history are beautifully put together in my mind. Maine has so much more to learn and admire than the tasty lobster. I recommend this very informative book.
I enjoy learning about history and reading biographies of influential people. Reading books of this nature helps me to get a better perspective of life and the journeys of those who came before me in history. It allows me to learn about their lives, their character, what they achieved, their principles and what inspired them to make a difference in the world. This is a very well written and researched book that focuses on the lives and achievements of unique individuals from Maine who were influential in building the landscape and culture of our society today.I was very impressed with how in-depth the research was on each of the biographies. The author really has done his homework to create such comprehensive, honest and detailed biographies of these individuals. His writing style is very descriptive and intelligent and I enjoyed reading the very interesting stories of some of the people throughout this book. I especially enjoyed reading about George Burroughs.This is a really engaging, educational and thought provoking book. I highly recommend it!
"Maine Immortals" tells the biographies of a number of influential people from Maine. The people vary in occupation, from authors to scientists .. even a victim of the Salem Witch Trials. Each section of the book focuses on a different person. In a concise yet informative writing style, Wilbur Spencer, the author, tells of the individual's life and accomplishments. My favorite person to learn about was Solon Chase, founder of the Greenback Party. If you love biographies or are just interested in Maine history, this is a great read.
This book contains an unparalleled amount of information about some of the key figures in Maine's history. The depth and breadth of the biographies contained within the book is nothing short of astonishing, and must have taken many months, if not years to compile. As a result, I'm sure that the book is set to become a classic resource for anyone looking to find out more about past residents of Maine who have made their mark on society.The book is thoughtfully written, with great attention to detail, and would appeal to historians and lovers of the Maine area alike. I would definitely recommend this book if you enjoy reading about the lives of notable people; it makes for a very interesting and inspiring read.

You can see and feel the passion that he has for the subject, and you can also tell that he put a lot of time and effort into the research and writing.Each person that Spencer chose to highlight in his book has earned their place in the history books and he wants to be sure you learn about them. He gives you all of the important information in a way that is easy to read. He doesn't overload you, but you don't feel like you are missing anything.If you love Maine or just love history this is a book you need to get. You will learn things you didn't know you didn't know and be entertained every step of the way!
If you are looking for a good book on the history of Maine and the people who were a part of it, this book is for you. This well written book details the lives of prominent people who guided the history of Maine. The depth of the research really impressed me. In fact, I kept thinking how this would be a good textbook for college level students. Being from a “newer” state, I’m always impressed by how far back history of the New England states goes. Maine is no exception. The author did a great job going back to the beginnings of Maine’s existence. Whether you are a Mainer or just appreciate New England as a whole, this book will likely teach you something.
