I teach ASL (American Sign Language), and have for many years. This series matches my teaching style, and is excellent for total immersion. As a Deaf person, I had used many of the strategies listed in the book before it came out, and Hearing instructors sometimes did not agree with me. When this series came out, I felt validated and vindicated. Excellent resource. Buy it!
This new edition of Signing Naturally Units 1-6 in much more in-depth. The DVD is like having your own instructor with you all the time. The original book "Signing Naturally Level 1 covers Units 1-13 and each unit is great, however, much less content.Yes, this new edition is a bit pricy, but if you're a serious student of American Sign Language (ASL) it is surely worth it. The Deaf Service Center of SW Florida uses this curriculum with great success. I would not recommend being self taught if you're a serious student. ASL is a real language and must be treated as such.
In the product description, as I'm sure many of us who bought the book read, it states that the book will come with two DVDs. What they forgot to mention was that if you are renting/buying the used version, IT DOES NOT COME WITH THE DVDS. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY.
DON'T RENT IT IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A DVD TOO. I received my book with speedy shipping but what i really needed was the DVD's which didn't come with the book. I didn't read anywhere that says the rentals not not come without the DVD's. You cant do any work in the book without those DVD's. Will not be renting books that need to come with materials ever again.
This book and accompanying DVDs are a great way to learn American Sign Language. I need it for a class but even without taking a class a person could learn sign from this.
A great book for learning simple signs, a little bit about Deaf culture and signer's perspective. However, the signers use some California regional signs, which is confusing if you aren't learning in California. The exercises also reference signers by name and ask questions about what each one says. The problem here is that not each mini dialogue begins with the signer fingerspelling his or her name, and there isn't an index of sign models, so the homework is sometimes difficult to complete just because of that fact.
This book is excellent. Nothing short of. I initially bought this book for self study, then I decided to take a class at Gallaudet University. I was very happy to not buy a different book when I went; it turned out this was the required book! Level 1 ASL at Gallaudet goes through this entire book. It comes with 2 DVDs and lots of assignments (which many have the answers for in the back of the book). If you are interested in learning the LANGUAGE, get this book; however, if you're interested in learning some signs, go to singningsavvy.com.
I like this workbook. It is so much better than the original Signing Naturally. They really improved it. They sign more slowly, so it's easier for beginning signers. Signs are ever changing, so it's good to keep up.
