I bought this in Jan/2015 as an adjunct to the latest (6th) edition of the book by the same name (1100 Words You Need to Know). I have the box set published on July/2014.The good:(1) the cards are cleverly designed with 2 words on each card.(2) it is supposed to correlate with the book for an additional layer of review.The Bad:(1) the paper is thin, flimsy, and thus these cards won't last very long with much handling. We have 4 vocabulary students in our house, and this set probably can't take that much use! An "organizer" ring is included, but with the thin paper, I anticipate the punched out hole on each card will rip easy. Lamination is an option, as another reviewer suggested. But this means more work, and more $$$.(2) I thought that by buying the latest book, and the latest vocab box set that they would match. But, already, week 1, day 2, I have found that they don't correlate (book: "technology"; cards: "etiology"). I wonder how many other words on other study days won't correlate?Conclusion:This product just doesn't seem yet ready for primetime. Be wary of buying it unless Barron's makes the cards more sturdy, and ensures that the card list matches up with the book list.
Good idea and concept, however, the cards are paper (rip and can tear easily) be aware. I ended up returning my items because I am too hard on the flash cards and just used the book.
Overall these are nice flashcards that come in a box that opens with a lid that stays attached. Includes metal ring so you can carry the cards around, and a place marker so you can remember where you left off. The cards themselves are flimsy, printed on thin paper. I will definitely laminate these to make them last, as they are they are easy to fold, bend, and tear. Also, there are two words on each card -- you flip the card over to see the definition and its use in a sentence. Rating 4 stars because the cards are flimsy and it's a little cramped on each card with two definitions. These cards go along with the book 1100 Words You Need to Know, which has activities for you to do to help you remember the words.
These are cheap, hard to use ... in other words useless. - The first problem is that these flash cards are small and on thin hard to separate paper.It is hard to flip or deal through them. - The second problem is that there are two words on each small card, so the word oneither side is mixed up with the definition of the word on the second, and all in verysmall print. - The cards are small and thin and difficult to grab with your finger ... it would be hardto really design an ergonomically worse format for a flash card. - The print is so small unless you have perfect eyesight you cannot read the words. - The other thing is that the cards are so "busy" that it is hard to turn the card over tofind the definition, and there are not good example sentences either.Barron's is supposed to be world class is stuff like this ... this product sucks even worseconsidering they are supposed to be experts. Flash cards should be optimized for thestudent, not the profit of the flash card company ... shame. Avoid these useless cardslike the plague ... 1/5.
This is a terrific book for my ESL tutee who requires improvement with his vocabulary. In addition, his oral and written English skills require improvement. In order to help him prepare for further education, I am gifting him these flashcards over summer vacation and week-ends to enhance and expand his English vocabulary.Chris recognizes that he needs improvement in his English skills to prepare for college. In the hope of improving his English written skills and assist him in his self esteem, this gift is aimed toward his goal of a college degree. Chris studies hard and is motivated to enhance his skills. His parents and his tutor, me, support him emotionally and through books and oral exercises.
This is a great resource to help build your vocabulary as well as your kids or students.
Got these for my wife who is a non native English speaker. I was a bit nervous because so many reviews complained about the thin paper like quality of the cards.Not true! These cards are sturdy, and their convenient small size(3.75"x2.5") means they are not big enough to bend easily and you could even fit some in your wallet. For the price this set of flash cards was an unbeatable deal. They may not last a lifetime, however unless you love to shuffle them(which would seem like a personal problem), they should last plenty long enough for you to learn how to spell the words on them.Pros: Convenient size, good quality, plenty of everyday use words.Cons: Printed in China.
