This highly illustrated, practical manual of tropical pediatrics is an essential guide for all doctors and health workers in developing countries. Tropical diseases that affect these children are often exacerbated or caused by poverty and neglect. However, this volume recognizes that even the most limited and basic medical resources can make a significant contribution to improving the health of children. This manual clearly describes the symptomatology of common tropical diseases, using numerous high-quality illustrations, and offers practical advice on their effective treatment using the medical resources readily available in these countries. Additional features include guidance on running a district laboratory and pharmacy, and a checklist of essential drugs.

This is an important book. It belongs on the core list of textbooks at medicals schools in the tropics. The author, who is a white African himself, and who actually went to medical school in Africa, clearly and simply sets out practical guidelines for the management of diseases that the medical officer sees everyday; diseases which in the West would be managed by a team in ICU. A must for the student as well as for those going to do a stint where diseases of poverty abound. It will not be long before the student asks "Where is my Seear?".
