Got this book from our library (English version) and my children loved it. Decided to buy the Spanish version from as a gift to a Spanish teacher and her class. It is a beautiful real story about a book lover and how the good will of one person can have a big impact in a community. My children got to see how privileged they are, and how children in other countries also crave reading but don't have enough books. Biblioburro has charming drawing and simple language, very appealing to young children. There is a thief in the story but it just shows how the hero has to face several adversities. Nothing worst than "classical fairy tales" where you find kidnapping, murder and also thievery (Aladdin was a thief, and he is the main character). I attached pictures so you can judge yourself. Give this book a try, if you still don't like this particular one, there are other books about the biblioburro.
We have read the English version of this book to our child many times. We bought the Spanish version for a bilingual family we love. But when it arrived and we read it, we realized the story had been changed in translation. In the Spanish version the biblioburro is held up by robbers as he travels! Completely different from the English version which is centered around a little girl finding her voice and telling her story.I don't know why these changes were made (or which version was first), but I know that we did not need to add a book with violence to our collection. Stick to the English version and hope they re-release the Spanish version!
Sweet book except for the part in the story when he gets held up at gunpoint.
