Dr. Thurman's entire body of work is amazing. It is relevant in today's times as it speaks to the political and social issues that this country, our world, is still grappling within! Dr. Thurman is reflective and his work gives readers the ability to pause, reflect and go deeper on an inner journey of Spiritual awakening! If you are moving through any physical; emotional; or Spiritual challenge, this book along with all of Dr. Thurman's books provide the inspiration; comfort and uplift one needs to muster the courage to keep moving forward!
Thurman has less tendency than many writers to re-state the same conclusions in different books. This one, coming late in his career, builds on his earlier work while responding to the conditions of the time in which he writes. Therefore you may want to read some of his earlier work first. Whether or not you do that, this volume is a must-read for Thurman students, activists, and spiritual seekers of all kinds. It pulls together his reasoning, experience and faith that through dropping prejudice and hate, and pushing out the boundaries of sincere fellowship, we actually can bring into being a world community that respects and values all beings.
I read parts of this book over and over. Such a profound brilliance, and worded so elegantly. He phrases things as if they're simple, but just reveals that society has made these thoughts harder to grasp. Very thankful for this work and will keep coming back to it to sink it in further and let it inform the way I live.
A very powerful thinker with a profound message. If you wish to read a gentleman that shaped Dr. King's thinking, Thurman is a must read.
