"Outlander" is the first Gabaldon's book I ever read and it won't be the last to be sure!"Forastera" is the translation into Spanish of this wonderful story. By the time being is out of press, I hope it will be reedited soon.Following hints from different Reviewers I decided to give this story a try as it combine two of my favorite themes: time travel and historical novel.The time travel scheme is more an excuse to allow a modern glance to a historical period, registering and comparing situations with critical (and amusing) sight.As historical novel it is terrific: full of every day life details, accurate background and period reconstruction.The story is great. Starts in 1945 in Scotland, where a recently released nurse from WWII hospitals is taking a short vacation with her husband (a sort of second honeymoon) before settling again in civil life.A combination of strange circumstances launches Clare into 18th century thru a (magic?) gap in a stone circle.To her shock and amazement soldiers armed with muskets show up pursuing a bunch of highlanders. She is suddenly immersed in a whirlwind of action.When she realizes she actually IS in 1700 something it is too late. She is in the hands of chivalrous but suspicious Scotts and forced to "rest" at Mackenzie's castle.Thanks to her medical abilities she attains some respectful position but a combination of events put her (and the joyful reader) again in the path of ceaseless adventures.This is a book full of romance and cloak & sword adventure. Nevertheless there is some space to allow deep meditation on transcendent issues.Keep in mind that is the first volume of a series and you will be hooked to read them all!
