For a little pocket dictionary, it's got a lot in it. I like the way it is organized. It fits easily into my bag and on my nightstand. I am very happy with it. I still may shop around for a larger music dictionary but in the meantime this one is great and I will use it even when I get a bigger one.
This is practically useless for Music Theory I. It is too tiny to have many musical terms, for example, cadence. Not for serious musicians. I wish I'd gotten a different one, but I liked this one's portability, and the description was inadequate to make an educated decision.
I purchased one of these for each of the music students in my studio - they actually use it ALL THE TIME! For a very small investment, it is well worth the long-range use.
Every student should have a suitable music dictionary at their disposal during ensemble rehearsals. This book fits the bill perfectly for junior high, middle school and high school students. A must have for any kid in band or orchestra.
I bought this sight unseen for one of my graduating HS seniors who constantly had to be reminded to look up the musical terminology in the pieces he studied--sort of a spoof gift. Spoof better describes this 'dictionary'. While it has a number of interesting things in it, for the serious music student, it will be of little use beyond the very common and obvious. Certainly not of sufficient quality for the average high school student let alone a serious one. I cannot recommend this book and certainly will never purchase another copy. Back to the language dictionaries!
As a part-time piano teacher, I find this dictionary useful when preparing my lesson plans. It's also come in handy in my personal studies a time or two. I wouldn't call it comprehensive, but for a quick reference it's invaluable.
I use this dictionary for many years. Basic information and good size. Now I bought for my students and they love it. I will reccomend this book to all.
You can seldom go wrong with anything Hal Leonard. The Pocket Music Dictionary is awesome. It's easy to use, small enough to tote anywhere, and a great reference guide for all musicians. Every musician should carry a copy of this with them at all times. Way to go Hal Leonard.
