This book is probably on every Marine NCOs bookshelf or in their footlockers and for good reasons. The book is by the same author of the Marine Officers Guide, and has alot of the information found in that book, but there is also alot of unique information. Its chapters are titled:The Noncommissioned Officer, The Marine Corps, The Profession of Arms, Leadership, Traditions Flags Decorations and History, Posts and Stations, Reserves, Military Justice, Uniforms, Courtesy and Ceremonies, Service Afloat(Sea Service/Duty), Individual Administration, Pay Allowances and Travel, and Personal Affairs. If you are going to be a Marine and plan on becoming a NCO(corporal and above), or are going to become a commissioned officer, you have to get this book.

...shouldn't there be an updated version of this book. Especially with all that has changed with the Marine Corps over the past 13 years since it was first published. There also needs to be a reference appendix detailing a specific manual, publication or MCO involved with a particular subject in this book. Other than that, this is an excellent book for a Marine looking to earn a rank higher than LCpl.

I bought this book for the VP of the company that hired me after I retired after 24 yrs Active Duty USMC. They had a policy of sending new hire Senior Staff to a $10K "Leadership Development Course". I tossed it on his desk & told him my last employer teaches the course content to 20 - 21 yr olds, not mid 40's executives. After the weekend, he & the president came to my office & agreed I didn't need the $10k course. EXCELLENT reading & life lessons.

I don't know if this book has been updated with recent findings but wait a minute we are talking about the USMC so of course not it hasn't been! Honestly when I first got the book I was a newly crowned Cpl of Marines and it served its purpose as well as made me look moto during field days. And if you have never been in the military most of that doesn't make sense. Overall a good reference book but if you want to know what i takes to be a good leader i can guarantee you it isn't found in a book

A MUST for every Marine who wants to earn his chevrons and become a LEADER! It has also benefited me considerably in civilian life, as principles of leadership are just as important in the corporate world as they are in the military!

You should know this stuff already, but there really is not too much original gouge. --Most info is common sense and (should be) standard knowledge. The organizational explanations is available on the internet and will probably change over time.

The 5th edition of the NCO handbook is really outdated. I would not recommend that any of my NCOs buy it. It will only confuse them. I have been a Marine for over 23 years and never in my career has it been appropriate to call a 1stSgt "Top". I also own editions 3 and 4 and very little has changed in the editions. The Corps has changed but these books haven't.

As a Marine NCO, this book is a must have. Learning the history of the Marine NCO and talking about different styles of leadership are just small portions of this book. For new NCO's this is highly recommended. I buy this book and write a personalized message in the front for every Marine I have joining our sacred NCO ranks!!!
