I got this book at a local book shop and I'm quite happy with it.This is not an in-depth information book, it is a picture book with some information about many tanks and prototypes. It does not have every single tank ever produced, but it does have a lot of different tanks from several countries. The book itself is of great quality, well made hardcover, nice pages.I would recommend it to anyone interested in Tanks or Tank history.
This Lorenz Books 2011 release appears to be a straight reprint of the original ILLUSTRATED GUIDE TO TANKS OF THE WORLD published in 2005. Written by tank expert George Forty, it's a heavily-illustrated guide to military 'heavy metal' of the past century. After a 35-page capsule history of the development, combat history and future of the tank, Forty examines and describes some 230 tanks and AFVs in two sections divided into 1916-1945 and 1945-2005. Arrangement is by the machine's designation. The first entries, for instance, cover the A7V Sturmpanzerwagen, A1E1 Independent, A9 Cruiser Tank Mark I, etc.Significant tanks get a two-page spread; others, a page or less. Included in the book are the Cromwell, Challenger, M11/39, Char B1, Elefant, Valentine, Sherman, Hellcat, Panther, Somua S-35, T-34/85, Centurion, Abrams, Challenger 1/2, JS-3, M48 and T-62 along with lesser lights such as the Hotchkiss H-39, Strv M/31 and M8 Ridgeway.Though the back cover claims the book is "a definitive encyclopedia," I think that's a bit much. Forty's book is certainly an informative, well-illustrated overview. However, I wished the machines had been presented chronologically rather than by designation so you could see the weapon's historic development over time.In any case, tank buffs should enjoy Forty's book. It covers all 'the usual suspects' and other less well-known metal monsters that have clanked through history in splendid fashion. Recommended.
this was a great purchase just for the pictures alone. not to much detail on tanks but has some tanks i was unfamiliar with. definetly should be added to any military history library
